AEM Providing Open Source Solutions for the Government
Federal agencies are faced with increasing costs, budget reductions, and a presidential mandate for the government to be participative, collaborative, and transparent. Agencies struggle to easily assimilate, manage, maintain, and present information to its various constituents. Historically, proprietary vendor-based solutions limit the government’s ability to integrate and innovate. Information is typically spread across multiple programs and systems integrators making the seamless transparent sharing of this data near impossible. Now more than ever, wasting money on expensive, proprietary systems infrastructures is just not an option. President Obama has embraced the Open Source Software (OSS) movement and engaged ex-Sun CEO Scott McNealy to prepare a paper for the Obama administration on how open source technologies are the key to a more secure and more efficient government.
Success Story. A federal agency engaged AEM Corporation’s Vizuri Division to assist in the development of a comprehensive portal design to be used by agency employees worldwide. The existing environment had proven costly and inefficient. The agency needed an integrated, standards-based approach to unify IT systems worldwide. AEM an early leader in the adoption and assimilation of Professional Open Source Strategies, selected the JBoss Portal Platform to achieve this goal. Establishing a Portal Platform based on industry standards, along with open source visibility, provided the agency with great confidence that legacy and custom developed applications would be integrated seamlessly as part of the overall solution. To provide easier user access and enhanced security, AEM designed and developed an integrated DoD Common Access Card (CAC) authentication within the JBoss Portal utilizing Oracle’s Identity Management (IdM) with PKI that provides single sign-on (SSO) to users. As a true open source advocate, AEM contributed back the CAC PKI integration, which has become part of the default JBoss Portal offering.
Why Open Source? Open Source solutions are vital to organization’s success by providing transparency that enables groups to work effectively and with a strategic mission to standardize and enable next-generation systems positioned for growth. With Open Source, organizations can:
- Reduce overall costs – More cost-effective than competing proprietary systems.
- Eliminate licensing fees – Provide reinvestment towards more highly valued tasks.
- Leverage industry standards – Build on proven secure industry features.
- Increase User Adoption – Provide friendly administrative and end user interfaces.
- Lower Development Costs – Allows for your development team to exchange ideas within the “open source community” and utilize best of breed features and functionality therefore decreasing development hours.
- Decrease in development time – Open source developers can apply the best technology to meet the agency’s immediate needs.
